On this page, I will display images of Grendel: how various artists have seen him over the years.
1. Gareth Hinds
In the 1990’s, Gareth Hinds produced three albums in the Beowulf series. This picture comes from the first one, Beowulf and Grendel. All three volumes are now sold in one (badly bound, I’m sorry to say) issue.
I love Hinds’ visualisation of what Grendel does to the guards: he crushes them, reducing them to splotches of ink. Which, being animations, they already were of course; but now shapeless again, back to their primal matter. Wonderful.
